Here's the thing, I'll be working (honestly) ha in the electronics department and every once and awhile I'll catch something funny on the tv, and might stop what I'm doing for a few minutes - then I get a call from my manager from the security office - to go clean/straighten something up and stop standing around... He can't do that can he? I mean he can't write me up saying I was standing around, he wasn't there he seen me on a security camera, I mean what if was reading the back of a movie to see if it would be apropriate for a kid to watch for a customer and he seen me on there thinking I'm just checking out a movie - you know, what's my workplace privacy?

the only place in a workplace that is private is the bathroom... he can do this, and if he wanted to he could search anything on company property... he would be able to see the other people in the camera that you were "helping" so unless someone was there, you cannot give that excuse...

I installed CCTV security systems for a few years. And yes your boss can do that. Most security systems are more for watching employees then customer's. And in almost every state they have the right to listen to your conversations. Recording voice is legal in about half of the states. There are few laws about recording video anywhere, even in bathrooms and changing rooms. Most such laws just say that you can not take low angle shots like up dresses or toilet shots. And unless your in a union an employer can fire you for just about anything. Often camera domes are empty and the real cameras are hidden to trick you. Also cameras over cashiers can display what your ringing up at the cash register with an over lay display on the same view. Big brother is watching your every move, get use to it.

He's in charge! You work in a store that uses surveillance and I'm sure as you've showed, you know that it's in use. The only place that they can't use it is in a private place like bathrooms or fitting rooms. So yes he can use it to see what you are up to. Think about it: Companies now are spying on peoples email use within the company and are able to fire you over improper use. The camera is the same. They own it and you are under it.

Yes, your boss does have the right to watch you with security cameras, though it is not common practice. He does have other responsibilities, not just staring at you through cameras during your shift. Most likely, you suspect he has reason to think you a goofing around on the job. Change that immediately.

I'd never work for a company that watches everything I do. I just can't work comfortably knowing that I'm on camera. Bosses have no respect for employee's privacy anymore. It's a blanking shame.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Workplace privacy is an oxymoron. There really is no such thing. If their are security cameras in your workplace then your boss can watch you. It stinks but it's they way things go.

Is he just telling you in a polite way to "get moving" without writing up anything in your personnel file?

Most major stores have security camera's in all departments for EVERYONE'S protection. It's the stores property and they can have there own surveillance. Your Boss wants you to perform the tasks you are being paid to do, not stand around.

Yes...think about retail stores - there are cameras everywhere with the ability to zoom. If it's legal at places like WalMart and your local grocery store, then why wouldn't it be legal where you work?
