OR maybe they decided that Leviticus 20:27 was good and screw the 10 commandment nonsense. I guess they needed Roy Moore to show them the light.

As someone much wiser than myself once said: if you want to know the real reasons for people's actions, FOLLOW THE MONEY; and when they insist that it's not about the money, it is ALWAYS about the money.

The Church got to confiscate all land and holdings of anyone who was convicted of heresy and witchcraft; and since they bore no burden of proof (to be merely accused was to be as good as convicted), and since they could usually torture the accused into implicating one or more accomplices (who would receive similar treatment), the heresy business was an enormous cash cow for the church...

The Pilgrims and Puritans were not Jewish; but took the approach of a "level Bible" where ALL Scripture was of equal basis. Thus they saw no problem with the Mosaic injunction that "You shall not permit a witch to live."

In the late 1800's this traditional version of biblical interpretation began to be modified, where the New Testament was given more weight by Protestant believers. But even in the New Testament, the Scripture writers denounce witchcraft--though they've conceded legal authority to the government.

That's a fairly bizarre conclusion...quite erroneous, BTW. The Salem witch trials were brought about by a few hysterical teenage girls (is there any other kind?) who wanted attention, period. No more credible evidence than that and from there, everyone jumped on the bandwagon and men and women both were murdered to stop withcraft where none ever existed in the first place.
Read The Crucible by Arthur Miller.

YOur words are not nice however you need to know some facts.
The puritans of whom we are talking about were a special breed of Christians. They were from the Calvinistic cultic side of things.
Their decedents today are bringing you blackwater and other atrocities. They were not the nice Pilgrims that story books make them out. They were cultic control freaks who thought anyone who disagreed should be punished or killed. They began slavery in America. They started by taking the indians who would not convert... they made poor slaves so they traded them with the Dutch for blacks. They sold Quakers whom they disagreed with doctrinally and captured them as they arrived from England. They sold their own countrymen as slaves.
Those who don't know history don't understand that these people were setting up a kingdom like John evil Calvin had done in Geneva. He burned people at the stake who disagreed with him in doctrine...
People tend to idolize leaders and then act just like them.
This is the nature of religion.
Pick a good leader then follow them.
That is why true Christians pick Jesus... His example is hard to beat.

Perhaps their actions were merely hysterical and not in line with Christian teachings... Jesus taught us to pray for our enemies, not kill them...

"Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you."
- Luke 6:27-28
