All puppies will to some degree or other go through the biting or mouthing stage due to teething. It is important at this stage to provide chew toys and safe bones for your puppy to chew on.

A puppy learns about its environment through mouthing, if your puppy is biting to hard then say no and take your hands away or remove yourself. You can then give the puppy something they will chew on. In this way the puppy learns what it can or cannot bite.

In the end it is just persistance in getting over this puppy stage. Never hit or smack a puppy on their nose as it is very sensitive. Use your tone of voice and the NO only. And take comfort in knowing that your puppy will grow out of it.

Most of the time the puppy just doesn't realize his strength. Make a loud "OW" noise and pull your hand away. Give him a chew toy and refuse to play with him for a while. That's what his litter mates would have done if he were still with them. Well maybe not OW but you know what I mean. He needs to learn that he's hurting you and you won't play if he hurts you.

My puppy was doing that as well and some times she was so caught up in play that the OW thing didn't work. What I ended up doing which did work was to flip her on her back with my hand and stay over her, looking straight at her eyes until she ceased to fight me....trust me that's not always easy. I did that a couple of times and now she knows to back off if I say ow. She really doesn't nip much any more when playing with people.

He is simply going through a stage, the teething stage. Make sure you always have a toy handy to distract him from something other than your hand. Always allow him to have enough time to play with the toy (tug-o-war, fetch, other games). When your dog accidently bites you, make a sharp, high-pitched noise that sounds like a squeal. Your dog will let go in somewhat shock. You get up and cross your arms and walk away and ignore your dog no matter how much he pleads for you to play. You must be BORING. When your dog has lost interest, you may play with him again. You may feel stupid with all that squealing but it does work. I saw it on animal planet on It's me or the Dog. It's a dog training show and the techniques actually work. Imagine that your are in a wolf pack or something, you are the leader and your dog is one of the puppies, cubs, whatever, you have to stay stern. (this is also from It's me or the dog) Using spray bottles somewhat work, but it makes my dog extra angry.

Well, here's what I did with my 6 month old german shepherd who was always mouthing me. It sounds mean, but it does not hurt them in any way. I found it on a dog training site on the internet and believe me, it works. What it does is show your dominance over the dog. When he grabs your hand, instead of pulling it out, continue to push it into his mouth. He will begin to back away and will immediately stop biting you. If you can get him go gag a little bit, all the better. Do it every time he grabs you. I only had to do this about 5 times and my dog stopped mouthing me and eveyone else.

Having had our share of puppies we learned one thing. They all go through the biting stage because their teeth are growing and actually hurting a bit and biting gives them relief. I would suggest always having something for the pup to chew on whether it is a rawhide thing or one of those smoked bones you can get. You're right, When going to pet the pup always have something to put in the mouth. Sooner or later the pup will grow out of this stage.

This is what i did. He would bite me playing.. right when he bites say no bite in a firm voice and get up im done playing. I wouldnt give him a toy to replace him from bitting you. he thinks i bite and i get a toy. most dogs are attention getters so he only gets attention when hes good. I know it gets very frustrating my puppy would put every lil thing,on the floor, in his mouth when he would do this i put him in his crate with a chew toy. he would chew his toys and be safe. I would get your puppy lots of toys from hard rubber to plush toys, this descouraged my puppy from chewing my things. I wish you the best of luck!

I have an ez solution for you, when puppy goes to bite you instead of pulling away push your knuckles into his mouth keep doing it, of course do not push too hard, the idea is to wait until the puppy is trying to spit out your hand, push it out with its tongue, then keep doing it for good irritation to puppy just a few seconds then let him push it out, put your hand back in front of him/her and see if he/she tries to bite again, if he does repeat i guarantee it will work within a few times, the pup will turn his nose up at you putting your hand in his/her mouth. they can't bite down so well when your hand is pushing in. this has worked for me with several different breeds. good luck ;)
