1.Probable cause.
A reasonable suspicion that you are concealing weapons, contraband, stolen property, etc. on your person.
2. If you have been arrested.
Once you are under arrest, for officer safety reasons, you will also be searched for weapons & contraband.

1. Search Warrant - issued by a judge upon the showing of probable cause by oath or affirmation.
2. Probable Cause - The officer has knowledge that a crime has been commited, is being committed or is about to be commitied, and evidece or fruits of the crime are in your possession, and exitent circumstances exist.
3. Reasonble Suspicion - The reasonabel officer beleives, based on the totality of the circumstances that there may be a crime, and evidence of the crime may be in your possession, not quite the level of probable cause and the search must be limited in scope.
4. Incident to Arrest - A seach of a person and the area in his / her control imediately following arrest.
5. Consent - The subject give the officer his knowing and voluntary consent to search him/her or their property.

Probable cause, or an arrest is required for a full search.
A pat down for weapons can be conducted upon reasonable suspicion.
Then, there is always consent.
