They have a lot more in common than otherwise.
Both christian, both believe in the Bible, both believe in prayer, that god answers prayers, etc.
Mormons do believe that there is no way to be saved without Jesus Christ. Mormons don't believe that you can "work your way to heaven" through ONLY your own efforts.
The biggest difference is that Mormons believe that Christs church was lost from the earth and that God choose Joseph Smith to be a prophet and to restore it to the earth. He also instructed Joseph Smith to locate and translate an ancient book of scripture that was written by God's Prophets who lived in the Ancient Americas. This book supports the bible and is another testament of Jesus Christ.
You'll get lots of responses from people who like to slander Mormons who will grab obscure teachings and act like they're central teachings, but that's it in a nutshell.

For the most part Protestants took existing Catholic doctrine and edited portions they found in error through theological study of the scriptures. Luther founded his church on the differences he had. Calvin had further differences and so forth. Most Protestants retained Catholic creeds. They accepted the the canon of scripture was closed, and there was no longer revelation.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a restoration church. It was started from scratch, but based on returning to orginal teachings. It was not a graft of a branch onto an old tree. Doctrine is based on both scripture and continuing revelation.

Protestants were formed while protesting the Catholic church. The Mormon church was formed because we believe that the other churches didn't have enough of the truth for one to be better than another.

Protestants protest the Catholic church. They try to found their faith on the teachings of the Bible instead of the corrupted traditions of the Catholic church.
Jesus told Joseph Smith that no church was true. Though it took several years for God to prepare him he restored the true and living church of Jesus Christ in 1830. it was called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to distinguish it from the ancient church. As part of this process Joseph translated the Book of Mormon, Hence the name Mormons. We are very much Christians and prefer to be called Latter Day Saints or LDS for short. it's more accurate.
there's a lot more to it. check out the church's website to learn more.

Because Mormons are Christian, we believe in most of the things that Christians believe, including:
1) Christ is divine and salvation comes only through Him.
2) The Bible is the world of God.
3) Men ought to love one another.
However, Mormons are a unique branch of Christianity. We are neither Catholic nor Protestant, so naturally we have some different beliefs. Most of the differences are minor. One significant difference has to do with the authority to act in God's name. Mormons believe that soon after the death of Christ and His apostles, the early Christian Church was greatly influenced by Greek and Roman philosophies and political pressures. Despite the efforts of many good men and women, the true Church of Christ and the authority to act in God's name were eventually lost because of these outside pressures and internal, man-made changes. Mormons believe that God reestablished the original Church of Christ in 1820 through a man named Joseph Smith.

Protestants usually trace their lineage to Luther, who posted his protestation (hence protestant) on the church door.
The Mormon faith began with Joseph Smith who presumably dug up a book of Golden leafs, on which was written the Book of Mormon.

lol. None. They ARE Protestants, they're just a denomination of Christianity that most people find freaky. There are dozens of Protestant denominations because every time one of them gets something crawling up their butt, they go and create another new Protestant denomination.

Mormons do not believe Jesus is God. Protestants do. The Mormons took out all references of Jesus being God out of their bibles.
