When I was online dating a few years ago, on 3 different occasions, I had a date suggest that we meet at Starbucks. 2 of those times when I arrived, he was already drinking his coffee, and didn't offer to buy mine. Since I didn't know better then, I bought my own. My friend said that those men should have waited until I arrived, and paid for both of our coffees. She says I should have ended both dates. The 3d man waited, and paid for both of our coffees. But the others didn't. That is why I don't like coffee dates. I don't know why so many people online like them for the 1st date. They think it is safe and casual or something. To me, it is crowded, hard to hear and it is too easy for either one to leave early. What do you think?

Probably b/c a place like Starbucks is public enough to be considered safe, where there is alot of people just in case your intended turns out to be someone else...and yes, the first 2 should've been dumped..a respectable date would wait and buy your coffee...perhaps that is why with my online dating, I pick Dunkin' Donuts...lol..(not as loud..)

I think some will pick somewhere like Starbucks because it is fairly neutral versus something like a bar or a restaurant. The first two men had no class and no clue and that's why there single. Coffee dates work better because most of the time you can hear each other talk unlike bars etc... and since it's a neutral place you can feel safe and after talking you will know if you either want to go somewhere else with your date or you say goodbye and leave.......

the two guys who were already drinking their coffee surely do a lot of online dating and can't afford to keep buying their dates' coffees, avoid them.
the third however is worth more consideration.
personally i never met there, i went to second cup twice, and paid for the girl. i'd say cafés are a very safe place to go, because two scenarios are possible there: the two don't like each other, so they can leave. or the two really get into each other and get the conversation going and maybe from there take it to the park or just stay there it's not that loud, innit

I think a place like Starbucks is a good place to meet for the first time. It is safe and you can leave after a cup of coffee, it is not like going out for dinner. I do think though that your date should have waited for you before he ordered coffee.

I think it is really important to meet somewhere public for the first date with a stranger. Your issue with who paid and who waited is a completely different subject. Obviously if the place was not condusive to talking that doesn't sound like a particularly positive thing but, chances are pretty high that you could both get a real good idea if you were even the least bit interested in getting to know each other better and that's the point of a first date. If someone wants to "leave early" I would say that's a very obvious sign that they were not interested in getting to know you better. That's too bad for your ego but, it is completely allowed.

I agree with you. I don't like coffee, so "going for coffee" seems a bit presumptuous. It also insinuates that the time spent on the date is 10-15 minutes, since getting coffee is rarely an hour-long deal. It's best if it's just a meeting place, then you walk somewhere from there.

I sure don't! People I knew in Nashville used to meet at coffee shops that were independent.

However in LA I don't go on blind dates much. But one time we did and I went to an independent coffee shop too.

I did go to Starbucks today so I'm nt against going there (yes I am but what can I do) but I haven't noticed this as a place to go for dates.

it's definitely easy to leave and safe. To a certain type of person, Starbucks is perceived as really cool. In truth...it's the McDonalds of coffee.
Look for men that put more effort into a first date location.

Probably because it is cheap and if you do not like the person then you can end it early as you said. Also a cup of coffee can lead to something else afterwards if you do get along.

Well, your first two dates were just jerks.

I think the reason that most people want to have dates in coffee shops is the atmosphere. They usually have cool lighting, nice music, and it smells good. It's just a nice place to chat and get to know another person.
