Actually, the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit were based on an ancient religious Forn sidr text (Norse Heathen) It is the elder Edda or Edda Saemundar.

I guess you could say that the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit are religious novels. Not exactly like "Left Behind" or anything...

No, but the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are religious books already to an extent. They were written by Tolkein, a devout Catholic, and contain Catholic themes and metephorical elements derived from Catholacism that go unoticed by those of us unfamiliar with the themes.
