SO my dog is a 1 year old male shih tzu. Ever since he was young he loves to play with all kinds of toys (balls, ropes, squeeky things, bones, etc.) We love playing with him. Anyway whenever I have something in my hand that he wants (liek his ball or doll or something) he will bark at me like crazy until i give it to him. Its become verrrryy annoying because sometimes my nephew will come over and be playing with his own toys and the dog thinks its his toy so he barks at my 3 year old nephew til he gives it up. Ive tried saying no (in an aggressive, calm, assertive way) when he starts barking but he doesnt stop. Ive tried just not giving up but he ends up barking for like 2-3 minutes (which is a long time for my dog to stand here and bark at me) until i give up.
What can I do to fix this problem?

My answer on barking is a squirt bottle. My Westie/Shih Tzu was barking and a squirt in the face (with water of course) stunned her enough to stop the barking long enough for me to say NO Barking. She backed off and was a little irritated with me for a while but it was a week or more before she barked again. I sprayed her again, same response and I nearly never hear a bark now. She might whine and give me a subtle "woof" when she needs to go out but no real barking and certainly no nuisance barking.

Something to try anyway.

DO NOT attempt to do anything that Cesar Milan (otherwise known as the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic channel) does. He is a professional dog trainer, he, like me, has been training himself to control dogs for years. Cesar Milan does not make any magic noises or "tap" the dog. There is a very clear disclaimer on the show that says not to attempt the things that Cesar Milan does. If you attempt close physical contact with a dog without consulting a professional, there is a high risk of something going wrong, especially with an aggressive dog, and even if the dog hasn't done so before, it can and will bite anyone that challenges it that cannot show the level of dominance that a professional dog trainer like myself or any other dog whisperer does. You don't get to the level of dog whisperer simply by watching one work, especially considering the fact that Cesar cuts out a large portion of the training process so he can pass off his trademark "tsst" sound that manages to convince viewers that it's a magic sound.

One thing that I did to stop my dog from doing the same thing was to keep a spray bottle with water around. When he would bark I would spray him with water and in a very assertive way say no bark. I know it sounds like something you would do with a cat but it worked great with the dog. The trick is to spray him every time he keep barking. Eventually it will get to the point where all you need to do is show the dog that water bottle and he will stop.

Good luck!

plain and simple you need to stand up to the dog longer than 2 to 3 minutes. everytime the dog looks at the toy or begins to bark make a sharp firm noise like "chht!" and tap the dog on the shoulder in a firm yet non abusive kind of way. you need to make him realize that you control when it is play time and you are the leader of the pack. and then you have to reinforce this everytime the toys are out. even when you intend to play with him. you have to get him relaxed first. he sounds very high strung. you should watch "the Dog Whisperer" with Ceasar Romero... he deals with these behaviors all the time. try youtube. ( he's usually on the national geographic channel)

Barking is an extremely standard canines behaviour. issues it may mean are : Greeting, play, interest, possibility/ protection and soreness. consistently you would be wanting to seem on the context to why your canines is barking, You don’t desire to do training while that's a demonstration that the canines is in soreness. In that difficulty you desire to take the canines to work out a vet. I consistently propose to work out a coach in any behaviour undertaking. they could have the superb suggestion for you. They learn the behaviour of all varieties of canines customary. And to determine your canines is getting adequate workout. for many breeds its 30min an afternoon..yet some desire particularly much less and a few desire slightly greater. Now for some suggestions you could attempt. First attempt ignoring the bark. Pay no interest to him/her what’s so ever. Then while they cool down and end barking supply them interest or a handle or the two. in the event that they bark returned end giving the attention right this moment. canines learn issues superb interior seconds from while they do some thing. So in case you wait too long they gets at a loss for words. yet another technique you could attempt is utilising a large number muzzle. For this everytime the canines barks you place the muzzle on them and leave it on for a jiffy. you desire too returned do it interior seconds or they gets at a loss for words. that's superb to be executed once you're abode all day. Bark collars… i for my section don’t consider utilising those. Its superb to do all different varieties of training first in the previous identifying to apply one. undergo in suggestions no count number what technique you establish to apply it is going to take time and endurance. Don’t anticipate your canines to learn it interior some hours or days. some will take some weeks. additionally be consistence.

Well, my dog didn't know what hit her when he arrived. It was like boot camp for dogs, lol.
But I tell you, in the space of 2 weeks of teaching me how to train my dog, I was already seeing great results.

Especially if you have a little horror of a dog on your hands which clearly shows that she is this way because you let her get this way which in turn shows that you don't know what the hell you are doing as a dog owner.

Don't take offence to that because I was exactly the same way. I have a 5 year old jack russell and when she was 3 she turned into a little nightmare and it was because I let her get that way. I had no idea what was going on. All I knew was that she was fighting all the time with my older dog and I had to do something to put a stop to it. Turned out to be the typical dominance issue thing with my younger dog wanting to take over the household and then the world no doubt.

I got a trainer in who was excellent. He moved to Australia from America where I think he used to train police dogs and he spent a good time with me on the phone before I employed him to come and train my dog. He is also a dog behaviourist and I tell you, any question I threw at him he could answer and explain and advise on.

I saw him about 3 or 4 times but to this day I say every cent was worth having harmony in my home. It was either that or I was thinking of putting my dog on medication or getting rid of her. I'm so glad I took the responsibility to fix the problem in the right way. My little dog has turned from complete monster to very well behaved, loyal and obedient little angel. She still has her moments but she knows who's boss in the house and it definitely isn't her.

Go for it, do your research, get references, try to get someone who has behaviour as well as training experience and you should be okay.

Try to get rid of those toys and get new ones and hire a dog trainer that would help!

Barky shock collar. It sounds horrible, I know, but after just one time all you have to say is 'Barky collar!' or show it to them, and they will STOP.

*Tip...have your boyfriend (you said we) put it on him. He will be sooooooo loveyy doveyy to you!!!
