Supporting the worship of Satan? Aiding Atheists? If you pay taxes, you most definitely are. You are paying more tax because they are exempt from taxation. You are paying their share of taxes.

Meanwhile, we are burdened with higher taxes to replace over $20 BILLION of lost tax revenue each year.

Consider the brothel "church" where sisterly love is offered to male parishioners in exchange for donations. Or “churches” that practice witchcraft. Or the mail-order Universal Life Church which allows individuals to become “branches” and obtain religious tax exemptions. Or the foot washing stations and “mini-mosques” built with taxpayer dollars at airports. You support all these through the taxes you pay.

Other non-profit groups like the Red Cross must document their charitable work and receive prorated exemptions based on it. But churches and mosques receive exemptions even when they perform NO CHARITABLE WORK whatsoever.

Each church’s supporters could easily make up for the loss of tax-exemptions because each person’s taxes would be lower. Wouldn’t it be better if we could put our money toward things we believe in and not be forced to support those we oppose?

To Get a Grip - You mean the $30 million that the government GIVES to the churches to administer the programs. The same $30 million that the churches take credit for. The same $30 million that Bush funnels into "faith-based initiatives"?

I loved this, you get a star! I know that some folks would like to rescind income tax altogether, but in the meantime, I think taxes should be paid thru a paypal-style system that allows the taxpayer to earmark which programs are worthy of their money.
That way nobody pays for a program that they personally find abhorrent. We could call it "Taxation with true representation".

Up until that last few generations most charitable work was done by the churches, and a great deal is still done. The original idea of not taxing the churches had a lot to do with the charitable work they did, as well as recognizing their special place in our society. Churches existed before the government, at least the one we have now. When the government, and particularly the federal government, decided to become the largest charitable organization in the country, the churches were bypassed. The federal government is the least effective charity in the world. It spends many dollars, which it gets from the people in taxes - like either pay up of go to jail, for every dollar that comes back to us. That is my opinion anyway.

I'm certainly for reasonable taxation of religious bodies. Tax ought to be levied on all of their property and on their unearned investment income. Other than the collection plate, there ought to be no tax exemptions for religion..

---> Testika Filch Milquetoast's proposal to pay taxes according to ones own choice is an interesting one that I share. I propose that tax dollars sent ought to be earmarked by the tax payer. That each payer might opt to spend up to half of his owed taxes on selected programs.and perhaps none at all on other selected programs. The remaining 50% of a payers tax remittance could be left as it has always been, entrusted to the governing bodies to decide.

I think that every time I have to pay the IRS, thus giving money to a war I did not want and do not support.

Could you please explain to the IRS that ,as an atheist, I am exempt from paying taxes.

Let's also then have the universities, hospitals and other charities pay property tax which they are now except. These are all within the city limits puts a strain on its budget. When the biggest employers don't pay taxes , the city has to find its revenue someplace else.

bandycat,

There is no good reason that the business of religion should be tax free unless all of us are somehow to be, tax free.

The government should stay out of religion and religion should definitely, STAY OUT OF OUR GOVERNMENT!

We expect religious oligarchies in underdeveloped, uneducated countries but to suffer such abuse in what used to be one of the world’s leading countries, is simply unacceptable. Possibly our country can recover from the deep-seated damage delivered us by the Bush “Administration” . There is, however, no assurance that we are not now, as a results of incompetent bungling by the Bushies, on the slippery path to third world status. I, for one, hope we can recover but we must rid ourselves of the disaster that has become the Republican Party.

I would be in favor of that if the government picked up the tab for the 30 billion needed to help feed and house the under privileged.

Nice rant but ineffective.

Not paying taxes is an lame excuse for not willing to participate in society.

Very informative. I don't know why I've never thought much about this problem. ---I, sincerely, hope people will start thinking long and hard about this.---This would be one protest I would be willing to join.
Good question.
