The above answer is accurate as I can understand it, but the Russian gypsies had much to do with the popularity and spread of the acoustic guitar. They, the gypsies, took the instrument to Spain. Spain influenced Mexico, and Mexico influenced the early U.S.

Now, it is a world-wide instrument capable of many nuances, venue, and delivery. Long live the guitar!

According to my books on guitar they credit this with a man by the name of George Louis Panormo in 1832, they claim that he was reasonable for the modern shape in the beginning of the nineteenth century acoustic guitar, the Gypsies and the Spaniards were close behind !!!! To tell you the truth I don't think anyone knows for sure because records of this were not kept in those days !!! And the research that has been done don't seem quite sure who to credit for the actual first acoustic !!!!!!!

The guitar had its primitive origins in the ancient Near East. Clay plaques excavated from Babylonia, dated circa 1850 B.C., show figures playing musical instruments, some bearing a general resemblance to a guitar and having a distinctly differentiated body and neck. Later evidence from ancient Egypt indicates a necked instrument with marked frets about the neck. A stringed instrument from ancient Rome incorporates a wood soundboard with five groups of small sound holes.

I think you should go fro Martin since your BF leans more on the Martin side. Taylors and Martins have different "voices" and it all goes down to which voice does make you "smile". IMO a Taylor has a livelier sound and the Martins have a more relaxing sound. Why don t you try to ask your BF (in a subtle way) if he had already tried Taylor guitars as well. Another thing though in buying a guitar is that even the same model of the same brand can sound different. Actually, a few years back, my wife wanted to surprise me too with a new guitar. Good thing though is that I kinda had a hint that she was going to do just that but I kept on telling her that she should not buy a guitar without letting me choose which one I want. In the end she took me to the store told me her budget and made me choose. I ended up walking out of the store with a Martin on my hand and a huge smile on my face!
