Both are fine cameras. I have Canon 5D, Canon Digital Rebel (gave that to my niece), Nikon FM2 (when I have to use film).

I am happy with both Canon 5D & Nikon FM2. Nikon FM2 is, as you know, a mechanical camera, and the only thing the battery is used for is to run the light meter--as all the settings have to be done by the photographer (hence it is a good camera to learn about photography).

I hardly ever use that any longer since I switched to DSLR. My brother has Nikon F3T, and it's a tank (made of titanium).

I was very happy with Nikon FM2 with its fine lenses (all manual focus Nikkor except one autofocus, a 24 mm f 2.8, bought all used from camera shops). Basically they are all very well made. Canon 5D is quite a leap for me (from Canon Digital Rebel), being a full-frame DSLR. I had to invest in good Canon lenses to go with it, and I am really really happy with it.

If you would like, I am more than happy to send you a link to show what it can do. Coupled with Adobe Lightroom & Adobe Photoshop CS3, it's magic.

Popular photography has wonderful product reviews, http://www.popphoto.com.

Lastly, go to a camera store that is willing to let you play with them and see if you are comfortable with either one. Don't rush into buying anything you are not ready yet. Some store will take it back (in brand-new shape hopefully) if you return it in so many days (ask for their policy). Don't let them push you around into buying anything yet.

Keep in mind of course that it's the person behind the camera, and not the camera, that produces the results.

I have seen some beautiful photos taken with cheapo hand-held compact and craps from $5,000 body-only Leica M8.

I own the Nikon D40, not the D40X because all it is is more megapixels(which is mainly for blowing photos up) and I heard the flash isn't as powerful. I have heard that Nikon is a better camera brand however I think Canon may be easier to use. The D40 does have animated and helpful screens but it definitely would be a good idea to check them both out in person if possible.

From an image quality standpoint, there is no appreciable difference between the two. From a feature standpoint, both have their pluses and minuses, however for the average consumer they're pretty much equivalent.

I'd suggest paying a visit to a real brick and mortar store and handling both to see which you like better. Be sure to take several shots with each, as well as operate all the controls. This is the best way to determine whether or not you like a camera.

I have a digital rebel xti and love it. When I was trying to decide what camera to purchase I spent some time on flickr.com looking at photos taken by the two cameras I was trying to decide between.

Also here is a review that might help.

Both are excellent systems, with leadership in different areas.

I shoot Nikon, along with one of my brothers. Another shoots Canon. We really get into some great family feuds at gatherings!

Here's just one survey that might help.

I think Nikons are generally thought of as the better of the two, but are maybe harder to use. Depends on what type of photographer you are.

just from experience because i own canon cameras, i would buy the canon one, but it's all up to you and the needs you need the camera for.

Buy crayons - asking this question proves that you're too stupid to own a camera.
