Actually, it IS the armpit of the US, only it was New York state... Palmyra, to be exact...

The church was restored through the visitation of God and angels in 1820 near Palmyra, New York. Restored means that God the Father and His son Jesus Christ appeared and gave instruction how to bring back the church in its exact form that Jesus established when he lived on the earth.
I felt that the simple answer of "near Palmyra" didn't give the whole picture. :) See the website for more details.
