The key to getting a loose wavy perm that's more like a body wave than a curly perm is to have the stylist use large rods. If you have thick straight hair, find a stylist who is comfortable working w/ you hair type or you risk having way too much volume.
Also, it helps if you bring pictures of what you have in mind so the stylist can actually see what you want.
There are several perming solutions designed for different situations and effects.
"SALON PERMS - THE CHOICES
Professional hairdressers can offer a number of different types of perm that are not available for home use.
Acid perms produce highly conditioned, flexible curls. They are ideally suited to hair that is fine, sensitive, fragile, damaged, or tinted, as they have a mildly acidic action that minimizes the risk of hair damage.
Alkaline perms
Alkaline perms give strong, firm curl results on normal and resistant hair.
Exothermic perms
Exothermic perms give bouncy, resilient curls. "Exothermic" refers to the gentle heat that is produced by the chemical reaction that occurs when the lotion is mixed. The heat allows the lotion to penetrate the hair cuticle, conditioning and strengthening the hair from inside as the lotion moulds the hair into its new shape." http://www.womenfitness.net/beauty/hair/salon_perms.htm

Yes there are different kinds of perms. However, I was taught that a perm for some ment for them to get it wavy or curly since they have stright hair & a perm for others , generally African Americans, meant to get it straightened. NONE of this matters though, you can get any type of perm you want. When you get a perm don`t wash it for the first 12-24 hours depending on what the hair dresser tells you. They can last for up to half of the year, and I`m not sure if you would be still be able to straighten it chemically, but you could straighten it with hot comb, flat iron, etc. The perm effects may get weaker. Good Luck!!

I got a perm! Actually this is the second one ive gotten. I dont even know what kiind of perm it is, but I just make sure to show pictures of what kind of curls I want to the stylist, make sure you let them kno you dont really tight curls!! I really like mine, Im just sure to really condition it well at least 2x a week to keep it from looking fried. Make sure you really want this though, because you cant reverse them, you either gotta wait until your hair grows out, or straighten ur hair daily!

The curls depend on the size of the rods used. Go to someone professional with experience in perms and show them a picture of exactly what you want so there are no misunderstandings.
