Last week my wife lost our debt card while shopping at the mall. Several hours later when at home she finally realized the card was lost.
After calling our bank to report the card lost, we learned that $170.00 has been falsely charged in a mall store within the time frame my wife was shopping. This really pissed me off beyond talking about. I don't know who did the charging, but boy would I like to offer them a piece of my courage if I ever find out who's responsible.

Don't stores check signatures for matches, or even notice if perhaps a male was using a debt card with a females name typed on it ?

Other than paying a "lost card fee" to my bank for $50.00 can anything else be done to find the thief, or am I just plain screwed.

Knowing who would do such a thing to me would be really satisfing or should I just eat crow and consider it a learning experience?

Since this is a debit card, check with your bank and see if they have fraud protection against unauthorised use. With credit cards, you have zero fraud liability.

Most store don't check signature even the card I have on the back says "see ID". I don't know why your bank would charge you a lost card fee for $50. I've never heard such a thing.

You'll never find out who fraudulently charged on your account. The store would never reveal this information. They don't want to be the one who's responsible if you try to hurt that person.

If this is a debit card that is attached to your bank account, check with your bank about reimbursement. That is what the FDIC is for. Your money is supposed to be insured if you deposit at an FDIC bank.

Mine did. I had $4000.00 in fraudulent charges on my card and it was in my wallet! The bank re-imbursed my account.

If it was a credit card check your agreement to see if it was insured.
File all the necessary paperwork. What can it hurt?

This, unfortunately, is the trouble with debit cards. If they are fraudulently used, your money instantly comes out of your account and you then have an uphill fight with the bank to get it back, if you can. Its much better to purchase with a credit card; if its used fraudulently, its the bank's money at risk.

Believe me, the banks won't make any attempt to find them. They make so much money they just eat it. Most won't even charge you the $50.00.
