Hi,

I just recieved payment for an item I sold and I want to cash it at a check cashing place since there is a hold on my bank account.

I understand they take fees, but what will they ask for when I go to cash it, the check is for $3,000ish. I hate giving out my personal information to these places or anyone for that matter, do they use my drivers license info for anything? would false identification work? any help here is appreciated with regards to cashing my check and what is required.....

Have you tried to cash it at a local branch of the bank that issued the cashier's check?

Ideally, you should verify it's authenticity before attempting to cash it or releasing the goods.

"Individuals and businesses accepting cashier's checks for payment. Verify that the check is genuine. Call the issuing bank (use the phone book, the bank’s website or directory assistance — do not use a telephone number printed on the check — it could be a hoax) and confirm that the item was issued. If you can’t confirm that the check was issued, consider canceling the transaction or not releasing the purchased item until the check has cleared and the funds are available and not subject to chargeback." http://www.gcglaw.com/resources/financial/cashiers.html

Don't mess around with a check cashing place if you don't want to provide your real ID. If you try to end run around their security w/ false identification, you are violating the law.

What are you supposed to do with the money? If you received an unsolicited cashier's check in the mail, their is a 99.99% chance that the check is fake anyway and will bounce. If you were supposed to cash it and send some of the money out via Western Union, there is a 100% chance that the check is fake and will bounce.
