On an answer to a question I made a mistake and said Jesus came from the tribe of Benjamin. It was then asked by another person "How could Jesus come from the Tribe of Benjamin? Tribal heredity is passed through the father and Jesus had no earthly father." I since replied that Jesus did come from the tribe of Judas and he did have an earthly father in Joseph and that is how it is true the house of David will rule. Thoughts?

Well, he was Josephs son by law, I think.
But, Mary also had the blood of David in her, so he truly was a descendant of David by blood through Mary, and legaly, because of his foster father.

Wrong. Judaism is a matriarchal society. That is why it was so important for chastity and purity. A man had to be able to trust that the child was his--that's why Joseph was so troubled; here Mary was preggers, and he knew he didn't do it. God sent an angel to calm him down. Mary was of the lineage of King David, as well as Joseph., so the prophecy was fulfilled. Even today, if your mother is a Jew, but your father isn't, the Jewish religion considers you a Jew.

In many cultures, tribal heredity is passed through the mother, not the father. You even see this in Judaism. The child of a Jewish mother and a Gentile father is a Jew by birth. The reverse is not true.

I doubt if the people who created the Jesus story really cared that much about those details. If they did they would have made the geneologies in the Gospels match. Mathew and Luke give different geologies though and no amount of fudging around can explain that away.

Sorry, but I have no problem with whatever tribe of Abraham Jesus came from. It is totally irrelevant to me. He is the Son of God and that's what I care about.
