If they need structure why not send them to war? A lot of them probably would rather serve the country in Iraq for a chance of freedom other than sitting in a cell watching television all day sucking up the tax payers money. And if they served the country well why not wipe their criminal history so they can start off fresh? Any of this would be better than releasing them after teaching them nothing but how to become a better criminal with no chance of being employed or making a good living. What do you all think?

A group of soldiers work together well because of the trust factor that begins on the first day of training. Trust and professionalism. The Military isn't a place to give someone a second chance. It's comprised of people who have a sense of honor and duty for their country. This is what makes them professional, and they have earned my respect. Anyway, the U.S. Military would be a laughing stock around the world if the lazy Americans pushed felons in to military service and expected professional results.

Several reasons:

#1 - Not everyone would make a good soldier.

#2 - Who says a lot of them would rather serve their country than live in a cell and watch TV?

#3 - Going to fight in a war is risky. Don't you know how many soldiers lose their lives every week in this war? Not many would choose to do that.http://icasualties.org/oif/default.aspx

#4 - Training a soldier is expensive, too. It can cost as much as $250,000 to properly train a soldier for a skilled assignment Is that cheaper than housing a prisoner for 8 weeks? http://politics1.com/jcoc.htm

#5 - "Needing structure" is not often the cause of criminal behavior.

First off they are criminals and have already proven they can not be trusted. Second, why would anyone give a criminal a loaded weapon to expect them to do the right thing. The men and women that are currently in the military are all volunteers. They are dedicated professional warriors and they don't need some gang member or drug user watching their back.

Have you heard of Democracy??

If you institute this method then you better institute the Draft for all the lazy people at home watching TV all day a sucking up free Social Welfare payments as well.

Hell why stop there lets take any pensioner who has time on there hands instead of then sucking up all the sunshine in Florida.

Or better yet people of low intelligence who post none-intelligent questions on Y/A.

we don't do it because we have the world's most professional 100% volunteer fighting force in the world. A significant portion, in fact, a massive majority, of prisoners lack the qualities that are needed in a military person:
courage
teamwork
CHARACTER
integrity
strength
decision making skills
loyalty

all it takes is one look at some of the scandals caused by people with head problems who slipped through the cracks. Now imagine we take people we already KNOW are predisposed to crime (even non violent crime) and give them power and weapons in a foreign country. It's a bad idea.

Sounds good on paper but I definitely agree with Promethius. Prisoners aren't lacking structure. They HAVE structure from the time they get up until they go to bed. They don't have the qualities and traits Promethius listed. Those, and other positive inner things are what make a good soldier.

Because the profession of arms is not a jobs program for convicts. Even nonviolent criminals can't be trusted, and deployed personnel have to be able to trust each other with their lives. I wouldn't want one watching my back.

The military isn't about what the person needs, it's about what the mission needs. The mission doesn't need a bunch of crooks.

your under the false impression that the military simply needs human bodies.

The U.S. military is the best trained, most educated, most technologically advanced military force planet earth has ever seen. An its b/c of the people who make up its ranks. Wars are won by thinking outside the box, unimaginable loyalty, honor and courage. You will not fined people of such character in the jail systems. This country thrives of heroism and tough people who do this job. We needed the finest of warriors to continue to make up its ranks.

Besides that, what would people like me do for a living? I want to be on the ground fighting. Bring death to the doorstep of those who killed 3000 of my people and thought they could get away with it. Its an honor, even if death comes knocking.

I do not want to depend on the fellow next to me in a fire fight with the bad guys only to discover he is not there out of a sense of duty, he was forced to serve in lieu if Prison. That is not a good thing.

I'd rather have some one watching my back out of loyalty to me just as I watch his.

People who don't have the personal discipline and character to keep themselves out of jail/prison are the LAST type of people the military needs or even wants.
