the termite's gut was squeezed till microbes came out. they were put in a .07% saline solution the the microscope slide and then covered with a coverslip.....why is that coverslip sealed with petroleum jelly??? other than to prevent Oxygen from entering anaerobic environment for the microbes?? what's the other reason??? Help!! i need answers by tomorrow morning!!!! thankyou!

Petroleum jelly creates a seal to prevent dessication as well as spacing the coverslip from the slide to prevent pressure on the slides contents.

Not only does it prevent air from getting in, it prevents water from the saline solution from evaporating. This keeps the slide wet longer and prolongs the experiment.

it seals the water in and keeps the air out.
