I found a wallet with a few bucks in it, credit cards, and the owners ID. So I handed it over to a police officer, he then asked me for my ID and wrote down my inormation like my address and probably made a photo copy of my ID. I'm just afraid if the owner do claim it and says he actually had more than a few bucks in there, would I be blame for it?? And why did the officer ask to see my ID anyway??

Contact information. In my dept we take down the info so the information is listed as to who was the "finder" of the property. Even if the owner did claim to have more money in the wallet, if would be nothing the owner could do anyway. Why? Because you found the wallet, you didnt steal it and you have no idea who may have rumaged around in the wallet prior to you finding it. Its nothing to worry about, just standard procedure.

There may be a reward. The person who lost the wallet may be have been a victim of a crime and your information as to where you found the wallet would be helpful. There are a number of reasons. But if you stole the money or the credit cards, would you be so quick to turn it in or would you have left it where it lay?

Most likely, the owner will just be happy you found it in the first place. They took down your info. because then they can contact you if there is a reward or if nobody claims the item (it's given to you). Good luck!

In most places the Department keeps track of that info because if "found property" is not claimed within a certain amount of time, the person who found it is given the opportunity to claim it.

The officer probably also needs your info because he has to write a found property report and since you found it, he has to include your info instead of saying "Some random person gave me this found wallet".....

Probably for their own documentation and report. When they return it to the owner sometimes the owner wants to know who returned it so that they can compensate that person.

In case no one claims it, or a reward is given you can then be contacted.

You should have returned it to the owner without the police involved. You said you had his I.D. I would not go to the police unless it is an emergency.

Police officers suspect. That's their job. I never have *anything* to do with them, because if they get to know me, then straight away I am a possible suspect. (Although I think they are great for protecting everyone.)
