At the Tower of Babel God cursed the arrogance of man, and caused the workers to start speaking Spanish and German and Portuguese and Italian and French and English and so on.
At least that's what some of the raving lunatic Biblical literalists believe.

According to the Bible, immediately after the Flood, a few generations after Noah, they all spoke one language and started building the Tower of Babel - the purpose of which was to beat God at His own game and build the tower so high that they would survive another Flood. God could see that they were up to no good, and that these people had very sophisticated technology. He knew that if they could all communicate, there was nothing they couldn't do. So He came down and scrambled their tongues so they couldn't understand each other. This lack of communication with each other caused the cessation of building the Tower, and they all scattered across the Earth from there. Linguists estimate that there were about 20 original language families from which everything we see today developed. Even English as we know it today is only about 500 years old.

Different peoples in different areas of the world came up with different sounds to represent the things, places, actions, ideas, etc, that they wanted to communicate. You can't expect separate groups to all come up with the exact same sounds.
