There is no way you are going to be able to get an accurate answer on here. This is because:
- The person may be diagnosed early or late
- The condition may progress rapidly or slowly
- Everyone fights disease differently and we cannot predict how the individual you are talking about would fight it.
The only way to get a 'somewhat reasonably accurate' answer would be to speak to the doctor that made the diagnosis, because any answers on here are just going to be guesses.

I was diagnosed as having advanced emphysema in December 2005, and was given a forecast, that I had 6 months to live if i kept on smoking or 2 years if i gave up. I gave up!
I know the 2 years are approaching fast, and i have good and bad days, but may i say that if anyone wants to have a bet, i say i will make at least 3 years (stubborn git) because my family mean too much to me.
Oh i forgot.............I am not going anywhere when my pension is paid in arrears!

Smoking is the most important cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Avoid exposure to other airborne irritants. Get a flu vaccine every year. Avoid dehydration. Take antibiotics. Try oxygen therapy (this will reduce the excess of red blood cells caused by low blood oxygen levels). Exercise your legs - stationary cycling, climbing the stairs, walking, etc.
Sorry, but I cannot answer your specific question because there is no true answer.

It depends on how far along the disease is. Many people live years with it. They will need oxygen when it gets worse and be more limited in getting around because they become short of breath.

That's a question best asked of the doctor. It very much depends on the individual. You should know, however, that emphysema is a lung disease, but is not a cancer (though cancer could cause emphysema).

unfortunately there is no def time period it all depends on the severity of the disease and also how quickly it develops as it varies from person to person
best person to ask would be to get a rough idea from the doctors
