Deuternomy 18:10-11: "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer."

That last one, necromancer...someone who communicates with the dead. It must be possible if there is a commandment against it. Why would God forbid something that can't be done?

Deuteronomy 18:9-11 Says"9 When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, DO NOT learn to imitate the detestable ways of the Nations there. 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 ANYONE WHO DOES THESE THINGS IS DETESTABLE TO THE LORD," God is saying that humans believe they can talk to the dead, but they can't, and he doesn't want humans to try to do his work because this is showing that you don't trust him and that you Idolize some other type of spirit other than his, and that is unacceptable. Leave the spirit work to God and just trust in him and love him, we do not deserve his presence but can only hope for the chance to serve him. GOD BLESS!!

The Bible *would not* say that. the unique criticism of the Reformers became that the Catholic Church's provides you concerning prayers to the saints have been out of share to what became supported by using the scriptures and early Church custom, and have been additionally a distraction from the Gospel. This opposite intense--this unwarranted fact that those in Heaven *won't be able to* hear us--is a later innovation.

Suzi - wake up and read your history. The Church pre-dates the Bible by almost 400 years. What did the Apostles and early Christians go by? Tradition. Catholics believe in the Bible -all of it - as the inspired word of God. But the Bible itself says that not everything is written - "hold fast the instructions which ye have been taught, whether by word or by our letter" 2Thessalonians 2:15

God forbids it, because through the power of Satan, it can be done. And that's why it's forbidden. A necromancer gets his/her power from Satan.

Saul went against God's prohibition and consulted soothsayers and necromancers, and if you've read your Bible, you remember how he ended up......

Edit:

Teenage Jesus Freak: Saul should have known better. And yes, Samuel was pissed. What I was referring to was Saul's overall pattern of being disobedient to God (included using soothsayers and necromancers) and his eventual fate.

Yes, I agree 100%, it's the devil's work. People who are curious about it or have a notion of "dabbling" in it should be aware of that. That's the point I was trying to make

The word necromancy derives from the Greek νεκρός (nekrós), "dead", and μαντεία (manteía) "divination". It is a form of divination in which a person summons spirits of divination, for various reasons. These are not the spirits of the dead but familiar spirits (demons) who were familiar with the life of the dead person.

Because the person is not communicating with the "dead" but with demons - fallen angels impersonating dead people. The Bible tells us that "the dead know not anything". When someone comes to their grave, they are not aware of it. Jesus said that the dead are "asleep". They will remain in a dreamless sleep until Christ returns to wake them up. (Resurrect them). Communication with the dead is impossible. However, demons know everything there is to know about a person, and it would be easy for them to impersonate someone, and the gullible who do not read their Bibles will be fooled by it, such as on "John Edwards".
Even Saul was fooled when he went to a witch to have her summon up the "spirit" of Samuel. The being who predicted that he would die in battle was a demon, not the real Samuel, who was asleep in his grave.

The Bible also teaches us that the Dead know not anything...those fallen angels a.k.a. demons that pretend to be the dead do deceive people. Consulting familiar spirits also means to communicate with so called dead. There is a passage in the Bible that explains all of this. I challenge you to find it.

The spirit you come in contact with may very well be an evil spirit belonging to one of the demons of satan.
They are great impersonators of our loved ones.
This is why God warns against it.
