A lot of the 'relationship' between cats and dogs depends on how you bring them up together and what they experience. I have 3 cats and just over a year ago I introduced a 9 week old labrador puppy. She is now 18 months and she gets along with the cats fantastically. She licks them on the head and curls up to sleep with them. If the cats start play fighting then she runs up and sticks her nose in to stop them. If they start scratching the furniture then she does the same thing ( I call her my furniture protecter :)

This is just my experience, which along with I'm sure many other people's shows that labs are fine around cats, as many other breeds can be as well.

One of the most important things you can do is introduce the puppy to the cats as early as possible and usually the puppy learns that if they get to rambunctious around the cats then they might get a swipe or two. Then they generally learn to RESPECT the cats.

Any dog will get along with cats if you train it well. Also, it would help if you got a puppy so the dog can grow up around the cats and learn right from wrong.

If the dog will be a puppy I think the cats should be okay with it. How I introduced my dog and cats /cats and cats is let each sniff eachother through a door, I did this for a few days then I held one and let the other sniff it from a few inches away so It couldnt swat....Then a baby gate so they could see eachother. My first cat was very protective and territorial but now they love eachother. Don't be scared if one growls or hisses, give it time

The type of the dog doesn't effect how they get along. My dog is 6 and so is one of my cat's I got them when they were both young now they act like there best friends. My other cat we got her when she was about 3 and when my dog was 5. Those two don't get along very well. (by the way my dog is a border collie.)

Any dog can get along with cats its raised with. It may not see other cats as "friends" but in general a pup raised with cats will be either friendly with then or ignore them.

Just thought I'd add, I had lab mix pup who was born with a kitten in the whelping box. His mom adopted the kitten a week or two before she whelped. All the puppies in that litter were very friendly with cats, but this pup stands out. Even now in his old age he will try to raise baby animals of all types. If the kittens go past a certain spot in the driveway he picks them up and brings them back to the deck. He'll also grab baby rabbits and bring them to the deck too, a little drooled on, but not harmed. The deck is his safety zone, and anything that wanders out of it gets brought back.

*Side note, yes this mix pup was from my dog. He was born 13 years ago, before I realized how bad the overpopulation is. It was not intentional. But mom and pups received the best care possible, and even now I have contact with the people who got those puppies. Not one ended up in a shelter, and I did take back two and placed them in homes because the original owners couldn't keep them.

I had a lab cross. The two cats I had then loved her, and she loved them. I had the dog first, though, and brought the cats in as kittens. Older cats may not be as friendly, but they'll learn to tolerate the dog.

You may want to have a friend bring a dog over and see how the cats react.

It really depends on the dog and your cats, not the actual dog breed. Your cats may not like any dog, and dogs sometimes do not like cats. Its just like with humans. Also, since your cats are older, and you would get a puppy, it might be harder to get them used to each other.

Any dog CAN get along with cats, if they were properly socialized with them, growing up.

When you get a dog as a puppy.....they'll definitely get along with the cats.
