There comes a time in every fighters career when they have to hang up the gloves, and for Holyfield that was when he lost to Byrd and Toney. Even given the weakness of the heavyweight division, no good will come of Evander continuing to take punishment. His legacy is already cemented and part of history, no matter how sad the ending of his career is, it will not change the glory of his past accomplishments. Holyfield must eventually realize that he cannot continue to box professionally, unfortunately he doesn't appear ready to do that yet. We can only hope he decides to retire before he gets permanently injured. Untill then, about Calzaghe/Kessler.....;.

Yes.
But then again, his legacy is already tarnished. Even if he quits now, people will still view him like they view Ali - as a champion who was once incredible, once the best, but tried to hang on too long.
Luckily for Holyfield, the heavyweight division is weak as hell right now. So weak, that he's even got a very slim puncher's chance of making his dream come true.
I doubt he will, though. Ibragimov is probably the weakest of the heavies, and Holyfield didn't come close to beating him. To win at that age, you've got to have incredible power and a granite chin (as Foreman did). Holyfield's got a good chin, but even in his prime he wasn't the hardest hitter. I think it would be a brilliant decision for him to quit now before someone like Sam Peter or Vitali Klitschko who CAN fight damages him permanently.

No, his legacy will not be tarnished by anything he does right now. The boxing community has accepted the fact that boxers do not know when to quit. So they don't judge boxers on what they long after they should have retired.
For instance, Thomas Hearns have fought as recently as 2005 and 2005. He looked terrible, as we would expect from a 48 year old man. But nothing he did after 90s will tarnish his legacy or his legendary fights against Hagler, Leonard, Duran, etc.

You're absolutely right! Real Deal should've quit a long time ago, preferably after the second Lewis fight.

No. Even if he`d of been stopped it still has nothing to do with his prime and his prime is where he will be judged. As to the mediocrity of the heavyweight champions all I have to say if the Russian champions are mediocre the Americans must really suck. Any of these current champions would obliterate the so called champions Tyson beat to become world champion.

He should have beaten the slouch Sultan. Losing to him should prove the the greatest boxer in history that it is time to call it quits
