Our English Pointer had her first litter 8 days ago of 4 healthy puppies. The first day or 2 she wouldn't leave them, but now she's so anxious to leave them and get out in the yard, that every time I walk into her room, she gets up and steps all over her tiny puppies, totally oblivious to their squeals of pain. Even when I'm in the house I hear constant squeals as she steps on them yet again. The English Pointer is a very hyper breed of hunting dog, unable to stay still. Is this normal?

Although it's her first (and only) litter, she's not a young mother.

Hi i used to breed once upon a time, you say she is 7 yrs and this is her first litter, if you have had her a long time,? how much fuss do you make of the pup's and do you speak to her first,? our dog are very much like us they get jealous if she see you making more of a fuss to her pups and not her, so will reject them, maybe it may be a good thing you take her out away from her pups and spend special time with her, try after she has just feed the pups, and that way she will enjoy a play just with you, do you have any children at home,? maybe you could send me an email and we could talk abit more as it could be a lot of things but i don't know just from what is in your question as long as she is feeding and looking after her pups, i would not worry to much, as pups do tend to squeal allot, try picking one up you would think you were killing them,i hope that helps thank you kim

First litter mothers learn from trial and erroe-just like people. If she was too young a *****, she may be too immature herself and nervous to adequately care for them without stomping them. If it is a wooden whelping box try putting up a rail along the sides and the pups will hide and not get stepped on as much.

When she goes in there you need to move the pups to the corner of the area and when she is about to get up, you need to move them out of the way.
Her area might not be big enough.. She should have the size of about a large kiddie pool.
She could easily injure or kill one of these babies.
