when preparing this meal...do you put the pineapple on the gammon cold!...or hot?...also is it correct to add some caraway seeds to the potatoes while they are boiling?...help please...I have always snipped the edges of the gammon steak to prevent curling up!...and grilled them under a hot grill...and then put the 2 rings of pineapple on the steak for the last 5 minutes of grilling...so it warms through and browns...I always add caraway seeds to the potatoes while they are boiling in lightly salted water...and mash them in with un-salted butter and either single cream or evaporated milk!...and today when cooking for my girlfriend she complained i had DONE IT ALL WRONG...the pineapple should have been COLD?...and the mash was spoilt by adding the caraway seeds!...how do YOU prepare this meal???...

I dont' know the right way but, dang, it sounds good. Gammon? I have never heard of that.

Oooh.. I just googled it. We call them fresh ham steaks - "fresh" since they aren't smoked or cured and "ham" due to the cut (hind leg) of the pig.

I love grilled pineapple. We used to put pineapple rings on smoked ham (obviously i'm not kosher) and I always ate all the rings off the ham. Fruit and pork is a great combo.. how can either way not be good.

Caraway and potatoes are a classic and I can't imagine adding them to mashed spuds would taste anything other then wonderful, especially with good butter and cream. I happen to be a fan of the flavor of evap'd milk so that works for me too.

What does she say to do with the caraway?

Sounds like she needs to keep an open mind and try other variations of family favorites. You never know what you could discover.

Note: pineapple is heated.

Gammon with Pineapple
HT MC 25mins

Serves 4

Ingredients:
4 Gammon Steaks
225g/8oz Soft Brown Sugar
1 x 200g/7oz tin Pineapple Slices in syrup
2 teasp Worcestershire Sauce

Instructions

1. Snip the fat of the gammon steaks at intervals to prevent them from curling when cooking. Preheat the grill to medium.

2. Drain the pineapple rings, reserving the juice. In a bowl mix together the pineapple juice, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce.

3. Lay the gammon steaks in the grill pan which has been lined with foil. Spoon over half the pineapple juice mixture then grill on one side for 8 minutes, basting once or twice. Turn the steaks over, baste with the remaining juice and cook for 5 minutes.

4. Cut the pineapple rings in half and place on top of each gammon steak. Baste with the juices and cook for a further 5 minutes. Serve immediately.

In the US, it would be ham steak with pineapple rings...fixed the way you did it. Mashed potato of course, not sure about the caraway seeds, never had it that way. Any gravy ?
Re: grumpy girlfriend- did she eat it? If so...couldn't have been too bad.
