My daughter is 4. Her usual bedtime is 7:30. She just told me she was tired and wanted to go to bed and it's only 5:00 p.m. I wouldn't dream usually of putting her down this early but because she asked, I took her and changed her into her PJs and helped her brush her teeth and laid her down. The poor thing could hardly keep her eyes open and she had a big day at Sunday School (They played outside in the fresh air- always tires kids out).

My husband seems to think I should have made her stay up until 7. Whose right?

If she was that tired.. she needed the extra sleep. You did the right thing. If she had a habit of going to bed super early and getting up at 5am.. then yes, I would keep her up a little longer. I am sure she just needs her rest. If she still feels very lethargic tomorrow, call her doctor and let them know just to make sure everything is ok.

If she wakes up at 3:00 a.m., your husband was right.
If she sleeps through the night and wakes at her usual time, you were right.

My gut feeling is you should have kept her up until 6:00 or 6:30. A single extra hour (give or take) just gets rolled into the regular sleep, but any more than that often disrupts the circadian rhythm.

Good luck and best wishes for tomorrow!

If this was a one-time thing, you are right. Five in the evening is late enough if the kid is exhausted. You might want to wake her up around 9 PM to take her to the bathroom, and then she'll probably go right back to bed.

If it's a regular routine, he's right. Keep her up til 8 PM. Then get her up at 6 or 7 in the morning.

We've had similar circumstances many times with our two girls. It's cruel to keep them up if they're dog-tired. Just be prepared for when they wake up in the middle of the night! Usually when ours did it was because they hadn't eaten before nodding off. After being fed, they usually went back to sleep.

I think you were right.

Haven't you ever been so tired that you slept from 5 or 6pm till the next morning?!?

If she gets up too early, tell her she has to stay in her room and play quietly, maybe give her a small snack.

If you would have made her stay up she probably would have fallen asleep where she was, so it's best to put her to bed when she wants to go. At least she isn't creating a fuss and wanting to stay up till all hours of the night.
I think that you were right.

you are. do not force them to stay up if they are truly tired. doing so can make her even more run down and open the door for sickness. She is only 4 for pete's sake!! would he do that to himself? would he deny himself a nap if he was drop dead tired?? you are quite correct. and who knows, she may be getting a touch of a cold and not feeling well anyway. let her sleep.

YOU ARE!! MY YOUNGEST HAS JUST STARTED SCHOOL AND PUT HERSELF TO BED AT 4.30 THE OTHER AFTERNOON-AND SLEPT TILL 6 THE FOLLOWING MORNING.WHY TRY TO KEEP THEM UP IF THEY ARE DEAD ON THEIR FEET?WOULD YOUR HUSBAND LIKE TO BE MADE TO STAY UP ANOTHER TWO HOURS IF HE WAS KNACKERED?? AND AS MOST DADS ARE USUALLY AT WORK AT THAT TIME, MUMS ARE THE ONES WHO HAVE TO PUT UP WITH A GROUCHY ,TIRED CHILD, NOT THEM.ITS NOT VERY OFTEN THAT KIDS WILL ADMIT TO BEING TIRED SO SHE MUST HAVE BEEN WORN OUT.
SOMETIMES MY DAUGHTER WILL NOD OFF ON THE SOFA AT ABOUT 5.30 AND MY HUSBAND WILL SAY' AREN'T YOU GOING TO WAKE HER UP FOR A BIT?' WHY WOULD I WANT TO HAVE A CRANKY, WEEPY , TIRED CHILD AROUND FOR THE SAKE OF WAITING TILL 'PROPER' BEDTIME WHEN I CAN JUST PUT HER TO BED WHEN SHE'S NODDED OFF AND WE ALL HAVE A RESTFULL EVENING!!

Personally I would've tried to entertain her for a little while to try and stall her bedtime but hey you know your daughter best. If she doesn't wake early tomorrow morning then you know she needed it and you can say told you so to your husband :o)

Sure, if she was tired and had had a big day, I think it was alright. Are you sure she isn't sick? That's always a sure sign that mine are sick when they fall asleep just sitting there or really want to go to bed. I'd just make sure she isn't running a fever or something.
