I was a single mother and we didn't have a lot of money, but my son saw my sister and her husband who had money and my brother and his family had money, so he hunkered down and worked hard. He made top grades in school. He got his first after school job at 14 and worked the rest of school. He applied to many schools and went to one prestigious school and now he is an executive in an international company. Married and has two children. So being poor sometimes can be an advantage. It spurred him on.

You learn the value of things. You are thrifty and not wasteful. You want better for your family so will work hard to get it. You learn to do things as a family that dont cost money but build closeness. No one accuses you of being a spoiled selfish brat.

The child will learn to like themselves based on who they are and what their values are, not how much junk they have.

They'll learn what's really important in life- faith, family, friends, etc. without materialistic things getting in the way.

A child who is raised poor will- with the right parents- learn how to work hard and persevere for what they want.

. In poor families, like many families, love is what keeps the family unit together. Children also see much sacrifice by the parents to keep this family unit healthy and together. Out of necessity, they look out for and are protective of one another. They are used to sharing what they do have.

They learn that not everything in life is free, you've got to work hard for it.
They learn not to be so spoiled like other kids who ask for anything they want and then get it.
They learn to have respect for others and things around them
They realise the most important things in life: survival, family, hope, faith and love.
They realise that what goes around, comes around. If you do good to those around you, those around you will do good to you.

We were poor growing up and the best thing I learned was to appreciate everything. Christmas meant one gift but it was everything to us. We realized how hard my parents worked to give us things and we were taught not to waste anything and to be proud. A loving mother who was there for us meant the world to me.
