Well it has been a year since the first time i walked into a recruiters office, to see if i could join. Well I joined and dropped because of a kidney infection and fear of my parents. They were upset about the money they took out in college loans for me because I had not yet finished school. College has really not been all that great for me academically. I basically got suspended for my grades. I'm back in school now, and I have two years left. When i should be finishing in may but I took time off after the suspension. I'm 21 and its been a year since i first considered joining, and i still really want to join. What should I do? should I wait to see what the world climate is as far as Iraq and Iran? I want to serve. I know there are other ways to do it. I really want to be in the air force. people tell me I should move out of my home town for awhile to see if thats would change my mind. They think maybe I am just bored. but my dad says they won't support me if I transfer.

I would not be joining to get out of finishing college. I'm going to finish college. Whether I join the military before or after I get my degree. My degree is my top priority. But i want to join the military. I see people in uniforms and I want to be a part of that. I like all it has to offer, and all it allows me to give. both of my parents and my brother were in the armed forces

If you are still thinking about it, you should definitely do it. Go talk to a recruiter. Sign up for the GI Bill ,that way if you decide the air force isn't for you, when you get out you will have money for college. Plus you will be self suffecient in the air force and your father can't hang not supporting you over your head. Good Luck!

The grass is always greener...! Do you know how many troops would much rather be in school then doing some job they hate in the army? Many joined because they couldn't afford an education. Yeah, the uniform may look great, but after you put it on day after day, reality sets in, and it's not all that appealing. Instead, the uniform can come to represent confinement for those that wear it.
Do yourself a favor and complete your education. You can join after you have your degree. You will be older and hopefully wiser and better equipped to serve in the uniform you envy so much.

Why don't you try the ROTC program at your college if they have one, if not check out the National Guard.
Joining that might still cause you to have to go active, but you can delay that for up to 1 year. The Guard allows you to do drill for 1 weekend a month and one 2 week active stint per year.
I found it was perfect for me, I had a new wife and a baby at home.
I do have to say that with the war, your chances of going active is greater than when I was in.
If you are concerned about discipline don't they will teach you that just fine. I believe that you will be much better prepared for college when you get out.
I recommend that you look for a unit that has just come back in rotation and try with them, it gives you a much greater chance of staying at home.
; )
Ether way you should try to go in as an officer, the pay is better.

The Air Force is the only service where the officers do the fighting. To be a pilot or a crew man you have to be an officer. The only way to become an Air Force Officer is to have a college degree. This is going to sound cruel and insensitive. Get off your dead as* and finish school with the highest grades posible. If you just sweak by you can kiss your military career goodbye.

It's fine to want to join, but you have to do things in an orderly way. Don't quit college again, that's not fair to your parents who are paying for it. Join after you get out, although you should realize you will be far over-qualified to enlist in the AF. Is there AF ROTC at your college? But you have to achieve things as you go along, make your mind up and do it. You can't just keep jumping from college to the AF and back to college, etc., get 'er done, then move on. And make sure you move out of your home town ASAP, that's the worst mistake a young person can make, staying in the same town they were puppies in. You have to get in the practice of succeeding at what you start.

I read your question and the other information you provided. In the middle of it all, you say you want to serve. Yet, I detect that you are swayed by your parents and your friends and acquaintances. Given all that, those who say you are bored are probably hitting the nail on the head. Because I can't discover anything which motivates you to enter the armed forces. The answer to that can only be found inside yourself.
Joining the armed forces is a serious step. Only you can decide if you really want to get that serious.

You sound young for 21. If you can't be disiplined enough to study, do you think you'll be able to take the strick discipline of the Air Force? Are you sure you don't just want to run somewhere? Joining the military and having to go to the middle east is not a solution. It seems to be overwhelming for those who have that kind of mind set.

You can join the service and let them make a disiplined man out of you... or you can grow your own backbone, take control of yourself, and get your college behind you.
Then you could join the Air Force and bring even more skills with you and become an officer.
Cowboy Up little man - You, your parents, your friends, and your country will have much more respect for having done it yourself.

From what you said, I assume that there is no ROTC at your college, but that would have been my first suggestion. Above all, I do think that you should finish your education. My advice to you is that if this is something you really want to do, and you feel passionate about it... then do it. I'm not telling you to reject your parents but it is your life and you need to take control. Talk to to your parents and tell them how you feel. Do what you feel is right and everything else should follow.
Good luck and godspeed.

The AF will help ya with college. The AFSC that you will get will get you an AAS degree in that field. I do not reget enlisting in the AF.
