The only thing it says about swearing in the Bible is not to take the Lord's name in vain. It does not prohibit saying words that we consider "swear" words. As a matter of fact, the Bible itself uses the words Hell and Damn, both considered swear words nowadays if used in the vernacular.

A word is a swear word only if someone says it is. I was brought up believing that "piss" is a swear word, and it was never used in polite company. So I was surprised to hear my born-again friends using it. Surprise, the Bible uses it too (KJV). Like most words describing intimate body parts or bodily functions, it was considered profanity by earlier generations.

Interesting topic!

'Cussing' or 'swearing' is a social construction. I'm pretty sure the only word/s the bible rules out is to 'not take the Lord's name in vain'.

Swearing words because swearing words because they were all once associated with the lower classes. The upper class didn't want to use those terms because of that. Western society has always been ruled by the upper class. The upper class decides what is appropriate for the masses, and therefore, some words (swear-words) were ruled out... simply because it was considered 'distasteful' for respectable people to be using words that were associated among the lower classes. Beliefs trickled down to the lower classes and that's why we're not supposed to say certain words.

These swear words are not sins, they're socially inappropriate words. I think it's dumb that we can't say certain things that have the exact meaning of appropriate words (ex. 'poop' versus 'the S word').

I found some scriptures that might help...

Matthew 5:34
"However, I say to YOU: Do not swear at all."
James 5:12
"Above all things, though, my brothers, stop swearing, yes, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath."
Leviticus 19:12
"And YOU must not swear in my name to a lie, so that you do profane the name of your God."

I hope this helps!

Do you mean cussing or an oath? I'm looking up both to make sure I get the address correct...

Oath? James 5:12 (and other places)
Swearing? Leviticus 19:12

I think there is a bit confusion going on about which meaning of the verb TO SWEAR the question is referring to.
I don't think is about using a bad language.

look at the first definition the dictionary gives :
--------------------------------------
A verb
1 trust, swear, rely, bank

have confidence or faith in; "We can trust in God"; "Rely on your friends"; "bank on your good education"; "I swear by my grandmother's recipes"
Category Tree:
think; cogitate; cerebrate
╚judge
╚accept
╚believe
╚trust, swear, rely, bank
╚count; bet; depend; look; calculate; reckon
╚lean
╚credit swear

promise solemnly; take an oath
Category Tree:
express; verbalize; verbalise; utter; give tongue to
╚state; say; tell
╚declare
╚promise; assure
╚pledge; plight

-------------------------------------
The bible says not to swear refereeing to this meaning of the verb.

The Bible states It is not so important what goes into your mouth as it is what comes out. You are perceived by others based on you words so how do you want to be thought of.

The only verse that pops into my mind at this time is where Isaiah saw the LORD high, and lifted up, and cried out being suddenly condemned by his unclean lips.
The verse is Isaiah 6:5.
