Why are extremely devout Christians who evangelize called "Bible thumpers?" When I think about it, I would think that it would be more appropriate to call non-believers who criticize Christianity "Bible thumpers," because if someone is going to thump something, it usually means they don't like that thing. For instance, if I started thumping my printer, you would probably think I either hated it or was really mad at it.

Actually I think the term "bible thumper" came from the preachers raising the bible up and banging down on the pulpit as they preached with fire in the old days.

Because when they are speaking they are usually holding a bible and are very uh... energetic about their speeches most of the time. The keep on thumping the bible on their hands or sometimes on the thing they stand on to speak.

Old time Preachers, usually Holiness, use to do it whenever they were emphasizing a particular point in a particular verse. I have actually witnessed them doing it when I was a kid. Holding the Bible open in one hand and thumping the pages with his other hand.

I believe the term came from the behavior of some old-time tent revivalists who would thump on their Bible during a sermon to make a point (i.e., "It says so right in here!").

When a person makes an emphatic point, they may pound on the table (like Khrushchev did with his shoe on the UN podium).
People who carry their Bibles with them, and who have a passionate point to make would emphatically point to their Bible. They are giving the message that these words they're saying are not their own...they come from God Himself, revealed in the Bible.

Someone pointing to the bible as holding truth, salvation and hope (and doing that with love and humility), is a good thing.
Someone using the bible to bash in someone's head and condemn them is, I think, what brought that term into being. This is not a good thing.
