Oak--genus Quercus

The family Quercus, or oak, is the most common, and broad-ranged in species here in the South. From the huge Live oaks of the coast to the Southern Red of the Piedmont and mountain areas. Lots more to be confused by though.

oak, probably red. quercus rubrum.
maple would most likely be the predominant understory, especially in the north east. best guess is that 100 years from now, maples will begin to be predominant in NE then spreading south and west.
