Well there is probably bad news or worse news where this is concerned.
The bad news is that it could be arthritis settling into her hip. This is the perfect time of year for a flare up with the change in temperature and humidity. If she isn't allergic she can take anti inflamatories or if available to you a product called Aleve Liquid Gels is great for arthritis. The active ingredient is Naproxen and that is what most docs prescribe to early arthritis patients if you where to go to one. Arthritis can usually be easily diagnosed with blood work and or a X Ray.

However, that is where worse comes in!! Alot of times hip pain is an indication of a pinched or compromised Sciatic Nerve. The sciatic nerve runs from the middle of your lower back to the hips, down the hip and thigh across your shin and into the big toe. For some reason the pain usually begins in the lower back and hip area and it isn't uncommon to only feel it in the hip area.
What usually happens is disc in the lower lumbar becomes herniated or is buldging into the sciatic nerve.
The only way to detect this is with a MRI though, a X Ray will not show it, because X Rays to not show soft tissue damage.
This type of pain can be recognized by feeling a dull ache and also a jolting or stabbing pain, and without attention will only continue to be a problem.
It is not uncommon for women from 30 to 50 become efflicted with this situation. My suggestion is to start with your general physican and they will let you know the steps you must take to determine what you are dealing with.

Best Wishes, I hope your Mom feels better soon!

Check here a very effective sciatica natural treatment http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

Possible arthritis. Have been told I may have this in the hips myself and was given Predisone for temporary relief. It did help after a few days but cold weather tends to aggravate the pain in the winter. I was never given any official tests so I am not sure. I think she should get in to see the doctor so he can make a proper diagnoses. Osteoporosis is another possible problem. As we age, we lose bone mass and are subject to brittle bones. She should be taking calcium supplements and her doctor will advise her on this.

Two possible culprits come to mind: Arthritis and a pinched nerve.

Pinched nerves can be caused by the spine being slightly out of alignment. Or of the mattress she sleeps on is old, it could be breaking down and so not supporting her right, which can cause such pains.

I hope this helps!
