Don't libraries do this every day when they place books in either the fiction or non-fiction section?

God isn't the insecure one. The insecure Christians who need others to believe as they do so they can be sure that they've made the right choice are the insecure ones. God is far greater than words written on a page by the hand of man. You don't need to have faith in the bible to have faith in God. Personally I think some parts of the bible are pure mythology, some are history, without any religious significance, and some are just propaganda. But when you read it with a mind of wisdom you can find truth in it and find things that are useful to you. And if there are things in it that you are certain are just not true, well, they probably aren't. Ignore them and move on. Don't throw away God because a bunch of superstitious Jews wrote some things that just don't quite add up.

The Word itself says to not heed fables that turn from truth.
You can believe or disbelieve what you want. God doesn't make anybody do anything. But we do have a spirit within, that can exist on multi-dimensional levels. And there are positive and negative realites. Question is, are you willing to answer for the consequences of your own actions? Everybody is a Big Shot, till it comes down to it! And then they cry like a Baby!

Is your question driven by desire to unearth the truth or angst towards your impression about God?
Deeper level of the truth is that you will ultimately judge yourself albeit with compassion and love. Karma will lead you the next life whereas a chance to undo your previous mistakes. Asking you to believe meant to get you out the cycle of karma. No. there is no eternal punishment. But the more you return(reincarnation) the more you suffer in your physical life - that is hell.
A mystic could tell you the truth better than I do.

Good question and I think maybe I can add something here. As strange as it may seem, God actually wants you to judge the Bible. Does that shock you? This burning in hell thing is getting out of control. Do you remember that scripture that says, "Study to show yourself approved to God, a workman who does not need to be ashamed (now listen carefully) rightly interpreting the words of God"? In order for you or I to rightly interpret his Word, or words, we have to judge them. You see, we sometimes make the mistake of making God this monster in the sky looking for ways to slams us into a horrid place and not having a clue as to exactly who and what we are. And that is simple and unique creations that do make mistakes and are just trying to do our best. The God I serve seems to be different than the one a lot of people seem to think exists.

But, you choose not to believe therefore he doesn't reveal himself to you because your searching to prove he doesn't exist instead of trying to find him with a pure heart. We were created to love and praise God not to constantly question his existance. He gives people plenty of chances to repent they ultimately make the decision to go to heaven or hell not God it's called free will.

I have heard this argument that God punishes us for not believing. This argument is false. We are all being punished for our sin through death. We deserve an eternal seperation from God. But being merciful and loving he found a way to atone for our sins. We simply have to accept his sacrafice. In believing he is saving us from our deserved fate. He does not send us to hell for unbelief but rescues us from hell for our belief.
