Yes, an "overnight soak", such as you might be instructed to do with dry beans, is anywhere from 8 to 12 hours, although as few a 4 to 6 hours is often enough.

"Overnight" is just a convenience term, so nobody has to stand around their kitchen, watching a pot of beans, for so many hours!
