I said it was oil..but my friend said it was watercolor.

You're not locked in to one medium, you know. Many people use more than one.

Winslow Homer painted oils and watercolor. So did John Singer Sargeant and Edward Hopper.

He was best known as an oil painter. I've never heard of any watercolors by Grant Wood.

American Gothic ( I guess you mean that one) is an oil painting. He did however do many other works...also some watercolors.
