Quite a few reasons

1. Grooming standards, we are required to maintain a good personal appearance for the public since we are in a uniformed service.

2. Safety, yes I've seen some guys get tossed around by their hair, but it's not that common. An important reason is that Officer have to wear certain items from time to time. A helmet or gas mask stays secured to the head better with shorter hair than longer hair.

3. Easier to take care of. With short hair, if I get called in for an emergency all I have to do is get up, run a washcloth over my head and face, get dressed and head out the door. No brushing, styling or application of hair care products needed!

4. Short hair makes my grey hairs a little less noticable.

I wear mine 3/4 in long all over. have since I rode motorcycle in 1973. it is easy to maintain. As you know most dept have a uniform policy of hair will not touch collar so it is blocked in back.

still ride motorcycles and a helmet does a great job of messing up hair unless you want to wear a do rag.

Sorry Wanda ~ it is a requirement. Where I worked, the women could have longer hair but no one's hair could touch the top of their collar when they were in uniform so the women kept their's pinned up and under their hats. Many of the men shaved their heads but there were also alot of them that didn't. They also cannot have beards while they work in uniform.

And as far as keeping a suspect under control ~ try it sometime so you understand how that isn't always as easy as it is to say it.

Because law enforcement is a paramilitary organization requiring officers to conform to a set hygiene standard. That means hair of a certain length. Most cops prefer the shorter hair because it gives a certain look and it is also a sign of the type of person they are... clean cut, conservative, sometimes ex-military etc. Plus its easier to get it short and keep it that way then flirt with it being on the edge of to long.
Much of law enforcement is attitude, If you look the part, that commands respect. A cop who is dirty, long hair, dirty uniform says he is not up on his game and is a lousy cop. Look at the Marines. Its 90% attitude and look that wins the day. When a guy gets out of the car with a clean pressed uniform, polished leather, shined shoes, in shape etc...people go Oh crap..... Thats the point.

If a restrainee grabs their hair, the failure is in the cops to restrain him effectively. Every day, all over the world, people are placed in holds even for therapeutic reasons, and shaving the head bald is not a requirement of the prefessions...
