My cat is about 8 years old, he's an inside cat, and only is outside when he escapes every once in awhile... For about 6 months now he crouches down and coughs... kinda like the kind you just can't get out. It doesn't necassarily sound painful, just yucky... What could this be? I know I need to take him to the vet and I will, but I'm just wondering what I should expect.

It could be a hairball. Get some hairball medicine from any pet store and try that first. It's a lot less expensive than a vet visit. If that doesn't cure the coughing take your cat to the vet.

Your vet will want to run tests, of course. He might even ask if you want blood tests and x-rays: Sometimes the cough can mean something else. Go ahead and get them: They'll be expensive, but they might show you what you're dealing with too.
If it's treatable, your vet should be able to give you a prescription and make suggestions about feeding him.
