....and why are US companies and the government allowing this?...most all of our families were immigrants and most had to learn english. for example people do lose jobs, not just to illegal immigrants but to americans of spanish decent who are native spanish speakers, companies are giving them jobs over others with more experience and longer time with the company just because they speak spanish even if their english is not so good. for example my husband is an immigrant, but he spent years learning and practicing english so he could do well in america, but now that he is here the companies are not hiring him because spanish is not a language he speaks, nevermind that he speaks 4 other languages, if no spanish then no way. how can we work to make english the official language in the US? i dont care what people speak in their homes, but in the business world there must be a medium of communication.

ok i do understand the market and why companies do what they do, its not fair, but that is business. but when its just the staff should the spanish speakers be huddled in a corner and refuse to speak english making the company hire a manager just for the spanish speakers?.....and also would officiating english as language of the US not set boundaries and encourage people to learn english so that our country can be unified.
i worked with a woman who spoke NO english, this isnt fair to all those others who worked hard to know english. it isnt fair to other immigrants.

ok protecting the culture is fine, but if you immigrated here then you should have some respect for the country that allowed you in. refusing to speak the language and waving a different country's flag isnt respectful. if you want to only speak your native language and if you want to waive your native country's flag then dont live in this one, go back to your old one. its that simple.

I know exactly what your talking about. I am a spanish American, but I think that English is a perfect way to have a medium of communication. That is Stupid that your husband speaks 4 foreign languages that are not spanish, but some one who just speaks spanish will get a job. Spanish is not the only 2nd language, there are others like Russian, Vietnamese, ect. why is it just spanish speakers. I find this very offensive as a Hipanic, it gives us Hispanics a bad name. Tell ur husband I am proud of him for using enlish in the USA. I am fine with them using the language at home, but at work, come on, if I went to Spain, or Mexico, or Argentina, or ANY Spanish speaking country, I would use Spanish, But in an English Speaking country I will speak English, Yes We should make English the Official Language. If we dont, what will immigrants from that speak other languages do? they will have to learn Spanish and English, that wouldnt be fair that they would be learning another language while a Spanish speaker wouldnt have to.
also, if the companies would only offer their services in english, it would make it easier for a spanish speaker to learn english, b/c if they are more comfortable with spanish, they will be temted to use spanish, that is mean if the companies take away the opportunity for spanish speakers to practice their english becuase of the temptation to use spanish.

Spanish Speakers In The Us

Miss Jessica:

It is quite simple. US companies are market driven and strived to ALWAYS meet the needs of their market. When the English speaking public (of any race) was driving the market, companies responded appropriately. Surely you cannot blame them, now, for changing their strategies to meet their growing Spanish-speaking market! It is NOT catering. It is Economics 101.

As for government, the US is a democracy, government by, for and of the people. If you have a growing minority group that is making the US a country of minority groups, no longer a dominant culture, then it is obvious the a democracy will change - not because the "threat" will make it so, but because it is the DNA of the "democracy" To change a coumtry's foundation (constitution) in midstream, would be disastrous to it future.

The reason is pretty simple, really. Spanish speakers_mostly Hispanics_have grown in numbers in unprecedented ways. And we have to realize they will probably be the majority one day, not too far away.

Regarding working to have English as the official language in the US, I don't think it will happen. Unless much mistaken it will be a complete waste of time, effort, and tax payers' money. Remember everything nowadays seems to point in one direction: the Big Money way, or no Way. Meaning that the huge corporations are benefiting inmensely from the Hispanic community. Just read and see how most products' labels are now in both languages. And yesterday I saw a store brand product with the Spanish wording first, followed by the English one!!!

Well, maybe all the Germans, Russians, Italians, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, etc. people who live here should start demanding to these Spanish pandering companies that those companies cater to THEM as well. Maybe they should demand German, Russian, etc. signs everywhere. And bilingual should mean every language not just Spanish. Maybe companies would stop pandering to only one group and go back to English.
People who move to the U.S. have the responsibility to learn English, not the other way around.

Because if the government does not get it's finger out and do something America will be a Spanish speaking country. They come here have more children than any other nation. It is obvious that they will be the majority soon.

Liberal Pandering and companies who have no guts to do the RIGHT thing.

It's not the people, it's the companies that put things in Spanish. Blame them. It's not like Spanish speakers went into the board rooms and said, "Please, put this in English and this in Spanish - OR WE WON'T BUY FROM YOU!."

ONCE AGAIN, IT'S NOT THEM, IT'S THE ORGANIZATIONS.

ps: I'm glad that you put Spanish speakers, most people would have put, "Why do Mexicans come here and make companies put things in Mexican?"...

Do you think all the Spanish speakers got up one day and in unison "demanded" to be "catered" to? US companies "allowing" it, the companies are the ones doing it to increase revenue. How can anybody think otherwise, do you think Spanish speakers broke in and changed the phones to press one for English? There are 40 million or so legal Spanish speakers in the US, and that money spends just the same as yours, if you have a complaint about it tell the big business instead of the people who had NOTHING to do with it!
