You are quite correct.
Jesus promised, "I will build my Church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it" (Matt. 16:18). This means that his Church will never be destroyed and will never fall away from him. His Church will survive until his return. Among the Christian churches, only the Catholic Church has existed since the time of Jesus. Every other Christian church is an offshoot of the Catholic Church. The Eastern Orthodox churches broke away from unity with the pope in 1054. The Protestant churches were established during the Reformation, which began in 1517. (Most of today’s Protestant churches are actually offshoots of the original Protestant offshoots.) Only the Catholic Church existed in the tenth century, in the fifth century, and in the first century, faithfully teaching the doctrines given by Christ to the apostles, omitting nothing. The line of popes can be traced back, in unbroken succession, to Peter himself. This is unequaled by any institution in history: Even the oldest government is new compared to the papacy. The Catholic Church has existed for nearly 2,000 years, despite constant opposition from the world. This is testimony to the Church’s divine origin: Any merely human organization would have collapsed long ago. The Catholic Church is today the most vigorous church in the world (and the largest, with a billion members: one sixth of the human race), and that is testimony not to the cleverness of the Church’s leaders, but to the protection of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus’ Church is called catholic ("universal" in Greek) because it is his gift to all people. He told his apostles to go throughout the world and make disciples of "all nations" (Matt. 28:19–20). For 2,000 years the Catholic Church has carried out this mission, preaching the good news that Christ died for all men and that he wants all of us to be members of his universal family (Gal. 3:28). Nowadays the Catholic Church is found in every country of the world and is still sending out missionaries to "make disciples of all nations" (Matt. 28:19). The Church Jesus established was known by its most common title, "the Catholic Church," at least as early as the year 107, when Ignatius of Antioch used that title to describe the one Church Jesus founded. The title apparently was old in Ignatius’s time, which means it went all the way back to the time of the apostles.

The Catholic church is in fact the remnant of what was once Christ's original church. However, The people fell away from true understanding and belief. Many great and precious things were taken out of the bible and much pomp and circumstance were entered in to church service. This was done to appease the people and make them like the church more. This is called the great apostasy and as the apostles died there was no one worthy of continuing the priesthood so Father removed it from the earth. Thus began the dark ages. There are scriptures in the bible that foretell of this, as likewise there are scriptures foretelling of Father's priesthood and accompanying church being restored to never again be taken from the earth. Those same scriptures tell us how to recognize this restored church Of Jesus Christ. It is all in the bible. Why are these scriptures overlooked or disregarded?

In Matthew 5:17-20 Jesus states he is NOT here to start a new religion; but to fix the Jewish one. Jesus was a Rabi even. Something the catholic Church loves to not let you know. I understand it was nine years before the Christians started spreading beyond Israel.
It was not until 305/6 A.D. that the Catholic Church was formed. Thirty men got together and twenty-nine of them decided to make a new church that would NOT obey All Jesus required of us. They must not have wanted to put so much work in. Since then it has made up many lies to make itself look the way they would like it. But truth is missing.
That is why when the Printing Press was invented men found out that they were not being taught what the dose Bible say by the Catholic Church; so they made ones that were to follow the Bible. ......
The original church started by Rabi Jesus was Jewish. IF you read your bible you could even read how they "met in Synagogues in the evenings".

The simple answer is ignorance and a contentious spirit of hatred. The Bible records Jesus warning His Church that the world would hate us just as it hated Him. this is exactly what we see today in the churches that protest His Church. They prove by their actions of hatred that they are of the world and not of God. Jesus prayed in His last prayer that we all be one and the Church He created still welcomes home those surrendering to the Holy Spirit and works towards that end to fulfill His will. May the Lord have mercy on those of the worldly man made churches teaching hate against His Church.

They know that they are following their 'feelings' rather than Truth. They attempt to deal with this guilt by justifying their split from the True Church of Jesus, by putting her down. Further, it is the only thing that they can agree upon.
Remember all, that the Church is the Mystical Body of Christ.

The Epistle of Ignatius to the SmyrnaeansThe Epistle of Ignatius to the Smyrnaeans (110 A.D.)
Chapter 8.
See that you all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbytery as you would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is [administered] either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude [of the people] also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the CATHOLIC CHURCH. It is not lawful without the bishop either to baptize or to celebrate a love-feast; but whatsoever he shall approve of, that is also pleasing to God, so that everything that is done may be secure and valid.

The Church is the Pillar of Truth, Not the Bible
1Ti 3:15 if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth. (n.b. he did not say that the Bible was the pillar and buylwark of the truth.....but the Church who wrote the Bible.)
The Church wrote the Bible and defined which books were canonical. See:

All the teachings of the Oringial Church and the faith based on the confession of St. Peter and all the fullness of the Christian Faith is fully preserved until today in the Orthodox Church (Eastern and Oriental) including the Coptic, Greek Orthodox Churches around the world.
The Original Five diocese were those of Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, Rome and Constantinople.
Rome continued to drift until they were no longer Orthodox with the other four Patriarchates and all of their descendants today, although it is still regarded as having Apostolic Succession.

the simple answer is ignorance. i am sure the devil is having a field day with this issue. saint jerome once stated that "ignorance of scripture is ignorance of christ", i feel we can apply this to ignorance of church history is ignorance of christ. most self professed "bible christians" do not even know where the bible came from, with even a basic study you will find that the bible came from the church, study a little more and you will find that the church referred to is the one true holy catholic and apostolic church founded by jesus.

The Catholic church goes way back. How old it is depends who you choose to believe.
In any case being oldest doesn't necessarily make it the best. The Catholic church is in a state of disintegration these days as we see from the unending parade of scandals and abuses.
