It might interest you to know that 80% of the film was shot in the Republic of Ireland, the F.C.A. (part time army reserve forces) being used as the extras for the beach landings.
The town scenes were filmed on a specially built film lot on a disused airfield in England.

Real explosives are used in most films and special effects. They are used in small to medium amounts by professionals who can make a firecracker amount of charge look like a major explosion.

They were controlled special effects used. It was a movie.In films they arenot allowed to use real explosives like dynamite. but it looks good eh?
