If you just need translations, use the Collins editions and if you need explanations, you can use Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English.

Oxford English Dictionary. It's worth a trip to the library. For every meaning of every word, they give a sentence that was found in published books. There's a fascinating book out about it entitled "The Professor and the Madman." Don't know the author.
