Guilt and shame are not the same thing. Shame may be felt by someone who makes a mistake, who lives in a run down part of town, who can't dress as well as their friends, or whose mother is an alcoholic. I'm not saying someone should be ashamed of such circumstances in their lives - just that they often are. There are no moral issues here. Guilt means you have done something wrong, as defined by your moral code of conduct. Anyone who lives by a moral code, religious or otherwise, will feel guilt when they violate that code. In other words, we feel guilty when we are guilty.

Not really.

I would feel guilty if I molest an otter repeatedly with a blunted knife, and there isn't really anything against me doing that in any religious tome specifically. At least none that I have read.

those who are guilty, feel ashamed, though they have different meaning, they come in a pack, so like if you feel guilty ur most likely to be ashamed ( not always) and if its the other way around, and you feel ashamed, you are most likely to feel guilty, it really depends, but I guess when it comes to relegion then thts mostly the case :P
