Banks can tend to put 7 day holds on large checks or out of town checks. Local checks might have a 3 day hold

But to know that a check isn't NSF, could take a couple weeks. Even as long as a month. Banks tend to send it back and forth a couple times before you find out it NSF.

Most banks, and I can only tell you from my experience, will deposit and credit your account immediately, if you have been doing business with the bank for quite a while.

If the check is from out of town, and especially if it is a personal check, non-payroll or not from a bank and in excess of $2000, then the bank may put a 3 business day hold on the check. The check will be credited to your account, but you won't be able to get the funds immediately. Call your bank for details.

It's actually sent back to the bank that it was drawn on. If it is NSF, then you might need to wait a few days to find out. Also, if you don't trust the payer on the account, you can request for the bank to hold it pending collections.
