In French it's a bit different. The word depends on the object, not the person it belongs to some of the time.
Mon is my if the object is masculine
Ma for feminine
Mes for several things
Also, if the thing starts in a vowel, it's usually not ma, but mon, even if it's feminine. So instead of saying ma amie, it's mon ami.

Depending on the object that follows you will either use "mon" (for masculine singular object), "ma" (for feminine singular object) or "mes" (for masculine/feminine plural object).
Examples:
C'est mon livre ("livre" - It is my book - masculine, singular)
C'est ma soeur ("soeur" - It is my sister - feminine singular)
Ce sont mes chandails ("chandails" - "They are my sweaters" - plural)
EDIT: Oops...forgot about "mine" and the point about using "mon" when the object following starts with a vowel.

my (feminine thing): ma
my (masculine thing): mon
my (feminine thing that starts with a vowel): mon
my (plural things): mes
The n or s is pronounced before a vowel, otherwise the o is just nasalized and mes is like may but with a shorter vowel sound.
It's mine: C'est à moi.
That (feminine thing) is mine: C'est la mienne.
That (masculine thing) is mine: C'est le mien.
Those (plural masculine things) are mine: Ce sont les miens.
Those (plural feminine things) are mine: Ce sont les miennes.

my= ma: before feminie nouns pronounced as: /ma/
and there is mon before masculine nouns pronounced as /mo/ [no 'n']
mine= moi /mua/ usually at the end of the sentence as in English.
