Human Beings and Animals are soft. Trees are hard. You could maybe kill a leaf by shooting at it if it falls off the tree.

The tree has no central nervous system, like a human. It does not need a specific 9mm section of the trunk. As long as it has leaves to absorb sunlight it will still receive energy from the sun and keep on living, with the exception of hibernation in the winter.

Trees life is just under the bark all around the tree. If you took a saw and cut all around the tree(its call girdleing a tree)just under the bark it will die.

Shoot in a firing range instead, shooting at a tree, besides morally wrong (a tree is a living thing), is extremely dangerous, should someone be behind it even at a distance.
