How many degrees before/after TDC?

A Renix Cherokee (87-90) cannot be adjusted. Its set by the computer. if you attempt to rotate the distributor, the computer will attempt to readjust it back to where it belongs. The Renix system uses a knock sensor to retard timing in the event of pinging or knocking.

IIRC, though standard setting is 2 degrees before TDC

Agree, the computer adjusts timing as needed. Distributor should only have one position that it will sit in. Any manual timing would most likely been done in the timing chain/belt. Test this by marking distributor to engine block and rotor to distributor. Loosen the distributor hold down bolt and try to turn. It should not turn if it does, I would consider on getting a new distributor.

It just say Degrees so this may be done by the computer. All I know.
Many vehicles have a label around the Radiator or under the hood (On the hood) and it give this information.

The timing on the 4.0 is not adjustable. it is controlled by the (pcm).
