thank God for your desire understand His word.
to better understand a scripture verse, it should taken in context. and so, we read the previous and succeeding verses as well. in this case, let us cover Romans 8:5-17. if you would kindly check the heading at the start of Romans 8 states: Deliverance from Bondage.
this is part of the apostle Paul's letters to the Christians in Rome regarding how Christians are to live in light of being saved. salvation refers to freedom from spiritual death (not physical, everyone will die physically). spiritual death is eternal separation from God. a Christian is someone who has realized, acknowledged, confessed and repented of his/her sins (Romans 3:23) and has prayed (Romans 10:9) to receive Jesus Christ as his/her personal Lord and Savior (Romans 5:8). the Christian has an eternal assurance of going to heaven the moment he/she experiences physical death (Romans 10:13) a person who dies physically without Christ in his/her life is bound for eternal destruction (Romans 6:23). hell is the more popular word for this.
the set of verses that includes Romans 8:13 talks about how a Christian--a person who has peace with God (Romans 5:1) ought to live. because a Christian, by the grace of God, do the right thing because he/she is saved; not in order to be saved. good works are the result of God's work in the Christian's life.
a good thing to ask is: how would one live his/her life if he/she has eternal security---the assurance that at any point in time, physical death is simply a homecoming?
since you are in the Book of Romans, may i encourage you to check this out as well: http://www.gotquestions.org/Romans-road-salvation.html

One needs to read the previous scriptures also to put into perspective.
We are under obligation, not to the flesh to live in accord with the flesh; for if you live in accord with the flesh you are sure to die; but if you put the practices of the body to death by the spirit, you will live. For all who are led by God’s spirit, these are God’s sons.” (Rom. 8:12-14) Surely no fleshly ties or associations could ever be compared with this position. What an indescribable privilege—to be sons forever of the Sovereign Lord and Ruler of the whole universe!

Paul tells us that not only are we saved by the work of the Spirit, but also we must walk by the Spirit if want to grow and pursue holiness in the Lord. We cannot be like some who thought they could begin in the Spirit but then find spiritual perfection through the flesh.

It goes along with all the other admonitions to abjure the flesh and to think of the spirit first. Ordinary life will end, but the life of the spirit (soul) will never end. In other words, how will you choose to spend eternity? With God or without Him?

If you do what you want, and sin and all that jazz your spirit will die.
Meaning you'll go to hell *unless you're already saved, otherwise you would just grieve God and thats just as horrible..*
But if you do good things, than your soul will live in heaven forever *but you have to be saved first, this is where people get the idea between good and evil being your source to heaven, but its more of just an idea of your walk with God and..I really don't know how to explain that...but yeah, in order to get to heaven you have to be Saved first, meaning you have to repent of all the wicked or sinful things you do, put your trust that Jesus died so you COULD get saved, and that you love God and want to be a Christian.*

This is why I do not read the bible. If I can not understand it what good is it?
If I had to guess what that means I'd say if you focus on the earthly pleasures you will lose your strength in your faith and losing your strength in faith means the death of your souls journey to heaven. If you do not focus on earthly pleasures you will be come stronger in your faith and your soul will go to heaven

My humble opinion, if you live only for the material world and all it's "trappings" then your spirit is not being nurtured and in that way you die.

Humans tend to want more, want it all.
The human flesh is never satisfied. We always want bigger and better things. We will die trying to obtain these things.
If we would learn to be content with all that we have, our lives would be less stressful.
If we could learn to be content with our loved ones and family lives--we wouldn't go looking at our neighbors wife for "extra" companionship--thus destroying our own family life.
When are we ever going to be happy with what God has decided to bless us with???
