Thats exactly what it isn't.
Atheists have renounced religion. The majority of us believe in proof, as in we will not simply take something as given simply because it is written in a scripture of some kind.
Atheism is open to debate, and is founded on the persuit of truth. Is it so bad to ask for proof in something before you believe?

Firstly, everyone is born an Atheist. It's not a religion. It is the firm belief based on scientific and philosophical evidence that there is no God or indeed anything 'supernatural'. Most Atheists believe religion is dangerous and have a hard time believing anyone actually believes in the nonsense printed in such scriptures as the bible. Someone can be an Atheist simply by not believing in a god or gods, they don't even have to think about it. A well educated Atheist with an interest in religion will be able to show you good solid proofs against the existence of any sort of deity.

Atheism is not a religion, it is the lack of belief in a deity. It is just like theism is not the religion. Buddhists can be atheists but it is the teachings that they follow that make their religion, which is the same as Christianity following the teachings of God is their religion. Religion in general is not the belief in a deity or lack of but the teachings of the religion.

It's not a religion, and any beliefs they have are personal ones, not ones created form them by some man wearing a robe. Saying "they BELIEVE god doesn't exist" doesnt make it a belief system.
To a previews comment, just because we cant prove god doesn't exist doesn't mean we should be agnostics... You are an atheist of all religions bar your own, you don't beleive in faeries, the celestial teapot or the flying spaghetti monster.... to acknowledge them as a reasonable possibility is to be an agnostic.... but you don't acknowledge them, you say Santa clause doesn't exist, even though you can't prove he doesn't. Does that make you Santa agnostic... I think not.

The only belief is the belief in no god. That's it. That is why it is NOT a religion! And Sweden probably has the largest population of atheists, but we come from all over.

Atheist is a religion like bald is a hair color.
Atheist is a religion like not golfing is a sport.
Atheists are people who don't believe in God, any God.
It is NOT a religion.
They do not live "mainly" in any particular country.,

It's not a religion! It's a statement of belief i.e.I do not believe in the existence of God!
Therefore, people who are Atheists do not believe in God and absolute in their belief.
People who don't know if there is or isn't a God but open to the possibility (and debate) are Agnostics. Agnostics are sceptical.
EDIT: to Earl D - I think you meant SIKHS and not Shiks. There is no 'Shik' religion.

Atheism is definitely not a religion, it is a personal philosophy, we bow to no-one and we are not a congregation, we have no church and we have no leaders, we are free from religious subjugation and we are free to question our conscience. IT IS N OT a religion! we believe in that the biblical God does not exist, in any form.
we are everywhere! mostly England! but take a look at the American Atheist site, you will be enlightened
sorry about the capitals letters I am not angry I am just frustrated at the Christian population trying to put us in a religious pigeon hole.
thanx ST

Atheism is the belief in what is proverble.
It is a sort of interlectual grouping of people who don`t believe in the fantacy stories put about by religions.
Their one thing in common is that they don`t believe that there is a god of any kind.
They are to be found where ever there are people of scientific minds. In short all over the world.
