In World War 2 Many P-51's and P-38's are rumored to have exceded the speed of sound in a dive. These early supersonic planes often experenced reversal of the flight controls or the flight controls not functoning. Many of these dare devil pilots frankly plowed into the ground. For that reason the Corsair had an "Airbrake" to slow it down when in a dive.
